2O11 Letter to WHES Contributors
December 6, 2011
Dear Friends and Colleagues:
Thanks to you and all of our donors, the World Hunger Education Service, through its website, “Hunger Notes” (www.worldhunger.org) has reached one million readers for the first time!
We are now a leading source of information for those who are concerned about hunger and poverty in the world and in the United States. A key reason for this success, we believe, is our ability to make information about world hunger available in several accessible forms for our readers:
• Our learning section (http://worldhunger.org/learn.htm) provides basic information about hunger as well as key hunger issues and sources. The readership of our hunger fact sheets has grown enormously over the last few years. See the most popular, “World Hunger Facts”, at
http://worldhunger.org/articles/Learn/world%20hunger%20facts%202002.htm . Special reports, such as “Food as a Human Right”, and “The World Food and Hunger Crisis”, provide information on key issues.
• Our continuing Hunger Quizzes are also very popular. We ask readers basic questions about hunger, and then, for each quiz taken, we reserve donor funds for contributions to hunger organizations. The quizzes are principally taken by students, and the donation to an organization in the field gives them an incentive to learn through the quiz. Donations this year have gone to 12 organizations combating world hunger and 12 U.S. organizations, principally food banks.
• On our front page and subsections such as Africa, Asia, the United States, and Editorials and Letters, we continue to provide articles and opinions on specific issues, including hunger and famine in Somalia and the high level of poverty and hunger in the United States.
Your help allows us to provide important and relevant educational information about hunger and poverty. We are very grateful for the past generosity of our donors, and hope that we can rely on your continuing support. Please make a tax-deductible contribution to WHES at this time.
Sincerely,
Daniel E. Shaughnessy
Chairman, World Hunger Education Service
