2010 World Hunger Education Service letter to contributors

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

With over 700,000 visitors to our Hunger Notes website, the World Hunger Education Service is a prominent voice in the effort to overcome hunger.

We are now approaching our 35th year of providing important and relevant information about world hunger in the form of articles, factsheets, analyses, opinion statements, statistical material, research results and much more, to a growing audience of students and those committed to the cause of eliminating hunger. Our website continues to be ranked number one in the world for searches on "world hunger" on Google and other search engines.

The "Hunger Quiz" that we initiated two years ago as a major educational tool continues to be a highly effective means of providing students and others with an understanding of world hunger and poverty. The "Quiz" is actually a number of quizzes on specific hunger-related topics that we revise and update every few weeks. In response to each individual who takes the Quiz, we make a contribution to an organization working to alleviate hunger. Thus far, we have supported 21 such organizations! With your support, our effectiveness in reaching our audience increases each year. For example, in 2009, for every dollar spent, WHES reached 110 people with the information on world hunger described above. We expect our final 2010 numbers to be even more impressive.

World hunger continues to exist, but we are encouraged by the continuing commitments of governments, international agencies, non-governmental organizations, foundations, and individuals to its elimination. Improvements in food production and distribution, better nutrition, and health all result from an awareness and increased understanding of the need to address hunger. WHES is proud to be a leader in creating that awareness and understanding.
